Senators beat Flyers 3-1

Josh Norris scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period on Friday as the Ottawa Senators beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 to end a three-game losing streak.

A slapshot from Norris on the power play beat Martin Jones 9:16 into the third period to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

Tim Stützle hit the target in the first period to put the Senators (22-34-5) up 1-0. In goal, Anton Forsberg made 27 saves for the win.

Alex Formento put the final nail in the Flyers coffin by scoring in a shorthanded empty-netter. His clearance from behind the net of the Sens slipped into the opposing goal with 2: 38 remaining on the clock.

The visitors’ only goal came from Cam Atkinson. Jones stopped 32 shots for the Flyers (19-31-11) who played well in the loss.

It was not the home stay hoped for by the Senators. They let slip a 3-0 lead against the Seattle Kraken in Game 1 before rebounding to win in overtime.

Then they suffered three losses against the Blackhawks, Coyotes and Blue Jackets before beating the Flyers.

The day after his 1000and career NHL game, all played in a Flyers uniform, captain Claude Giroux stayed home while his teammates headed to Ottawa.

The 34-year-old striker is reportedly set to be traded as the trade deadline approaches.

With the Senators, Nick Paul, who signed a four-year contract worth 10 million, was also left aside Friday. He too would possibly be traded before the deadline.

Alex Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin tied the game late in the third period and scored the game-winning goal in the shootout to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and John Carlson also scored in regulation time as the Capitals extended their streak to eight games with at least one point in the standings. Ilya Samsonov stopped 16 shots in four periods before closing the door to three Canes shooters in the shootout.

Ovechkin was the last taker to try his luck for the visitors and he didn’t miss his chance beating Antti Raanta.

Rookie Seth Jarvis scored twice in a game for the first time in his career and Vincent Trocheck completed the scoring for the Hurricanes, who suffered a third straight loss.

Despite this setback, the Hurricanes still extended their home game streak to 14 with at least one point in the standings.

Jarvis opened the scoring in the fifth minute to end his 18 game scoreless drought. He had even been left out in the previous three games.

Kuznetsov responded by finding an opening with a shot from a tight angle just over two minutes later, then Carlson gave the Capitals the lead at halftime.

The Canes tied the game on Trocheck’s goal in the second period. A sharp shot from the slot after a turnover from the Caps brought everyone back to square one.

Then, late in the period, the Capitals were once again unable to clear their territory and the hosts turned another turnover into second base for Jarvis.

Ovechkin spoiled the party, however, going 3-3 with 5:04 to go in the third period. Nicklas Backstrom won the faceoff, setting up Ovi’s 39th of the season.

Goaltender Linus Ullmark blocked 27 pucks for the Bruins

Taylor Hall hit the target on the power play with 4:47 left in the third period and helped the Boston Bruins take the Winnipeg Jets 4-2 on Friday night.

Hall capitalized on a bouncing puck in front of goal and lodged the puck past goaltender Connor Hellebuyck for his 13and fillet of the season.

That goal gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead. Charlie McAvoy scored shorthanded, in an empty cage, to seal the game.

Brad Marchand and Trent Frederic had the other Bruins goals. Charlie Coyle added three assists and McAvoy got one.

Goaltender Linus Ullmark blocked 27 pucks for the Bruins (38-19-5), who played a second straight game without center Patrice Bergeron.

Jack Studnicka replaced the Bruins captain at center for Marchand and Jake DeBrusk.

The Bruins, playing the third of four road games, are 4-1-0 in their last five outings. They will complete their journey at the Bell Center on Monday.

Adam Lowry and Nikolaj Ehlers scored for the Jets (28-24-10), who had won four of their previous five outings heading into Friday’s game.

Ehlers also benefited from a penalty shot in the first period after he was snagged by defenseman Mike Reilly. Ehlers came slowly past Ullmark, who stopped his rival’s shot with his pad.

Hellebuyck made 41 saves in net for the Jets, who were starting a six-game-in-10-day streak. On Sunday, they will visit the Chicago Blackhawks.

Tage Thompson gives Sabers victory in overtime

The Sabers players celebrate their overtime victory.

Tage Thompson scored the only goal of the game in overtime to give the Buffalo Sabers a 1-0 win over the Calgary Flames on Friday night.

Dustin Tokarski made 24 saves for the shutout.

The Sabers (21-33-8) thus won their first victory in two games as part of their trip to Western Canada. The third and final leg of this tour will take place Sunday night in Vancouver.

For the Flames (37-16-8), it’s a rare loss at home, as they are 15-1-2 on the Saddledome ice in the last 18 games.

In Tokarski’s case, it’s the second NHL career shutout. His first shutout victory dates back to his time with the Montreal Canadiens during the 2013-2014 season. His record this season is now 6-9-4.

At the other end of the rink, Jacob Markstrom made 33 saves in the loss.

After being brilliant throughout the game, Markstrom erred on the game-clinching goal. He came out of his net to make a clearance after recovering the puck near the ramp. Except that while trying to throw the puck in a safe place, he split the air and Thompson who was nearby had only to pick the disc and push it into the abandoned cage.

Following a lackluster first period, the game opened up in the second period, but both goaltenders were intractable.

Tokarski particularly distinguished himself by making the save of the evening and possibly one of the best saves of the season. He dived from one end of his semicircle to the other to steal what looked like a sure target from Calle Jarnkrok.

Jarnkrok also made his debut in the Flames uniform, he who was acquired through a trade with the Seattle Kraken. He was at the center of a trio completed by Andrew Mangiapane and Tyler Toffoli.
