Education: French students angry with mathematics – (franceinfo)
Gabriel Attal’s announcements, Tuesday, December 5, come on the day of the publication of the highly anticipated PISA report on Education. It shows an unprecedented drop in the level of students and France is not immune to this phenomenon.
France is far from being a gold medalist in mathematics. The PISA survey, which measures the level of 15-year-old students in 81 countries or territories, indicates that France is between 15th and 29th place among OECD countries. The level of young French people has recorded a historic decline in mathematics. “The level in mathematics is still unsatisfactory, it is also a cultural problem because mathematics is scary”says Ghislaine Morvan-Dubois, administrator and treasurer of the FCPE.
A new baccalaureate test
France is far from the best nations in maths. Asian countries as well as Switzerland and Estonia are well ahead in the PISA survey rankings. Only 7.4% of French people have a very efficient level in this discipline. The level has plummeted, particularly with the Covid-19 epidemic. Maths teachers are calling for a national revival. Gabriel Attal announced the creation of a new baccalaureate test dedicated to mathematics that students will take in first grade.
