Start of the week, an Angus Reid poll on the approval rating of provincial premiers was like a cold shower for François Legault.
After a result of 71% in June 2020, the Prime Minister is now at 31%. If we take the last three months, it’s a drop of 16%.
For its part, the latest Léger poll confirms that things are going badly for François Legault. Some 19% of Quebecers see Mr. Legault as the best person to be PM while the CAQ is now second in voting intentions at 25%.
Clearly, Mr. Legault is dragging his party down.
The first victory
During the 2018 election, Quebecers wanted to get rid of the Liberals at all costs. All the CAQ candidates could have stayed at home and they probably would have taken power anyway.
The desire for change was so strong that the outcome of the campaign could be predicted before the end.
Two years later, the pandemic allowed François Legault to be appreciated by the population, but the context of COVID was temporary, fortunately.
During this period, the Prime Minister was the only one on the ice. Despite the endless hours of work, politically it was pretty easy.
Looking back, Quebecers were never really in love with François Legault.

Three years
There are three years left before the next campaign. Thus, François Legault has, of course, time to reassess his popularity rating.
The current context with negotiations in the public sector does not help the Prime Minister’s image. But, it’s always difficult to win back an old flame.
Quebecers are also wondering what the CAQ has accomplished over the past year. The answer: not much.
Like all prime ministers, Mr. Legault will undoubtedly reshuffle his ministerial team in the coming months. However, the evil is not much deeper.
