François Legault doubts the assessment of the dilapidation of schools

Prime Minister François Legault said Wednesday he had “doubts” regarding the assessment of the dilapidation of Quebec schools. He therefore asked the Minister responsible for Infrastructure, Jonatan Julien, to review the assessment.

“Currently, the way it works is that each service center [scolaire] evaluates its schools. And obviously there is an incentive to say: “I need money for my schools,” said Mr. Legault, during a press briefing held at the National Assembly.

He said he hears “all kinds of things” about these assessments. “What I asked is that we assess exactly what that means, the famous ratings for schools. Is it a class that is dilapidated or is it the whole school? “, he questioned.

On Tuesday, the Quebec infrastructure plan 2023-2033, unveiled during the budget, revealed that 61% of schools are in poor or very poor condition. This is an increase, since this proportion was 59% last year. The CAQ government had nevertheless committed to lowering this proportion to 50% during its first term, from 2018 to 2022.

Further details will follow.
