This Tuesday, students from the Ali Halidi college in Chiconi in Mayotte took the floor to ask questions on a subject that concerns them at the forefront: the drought affecting their island and the problems of water supply. It must be said that in recent months, the island has faced a major water crisis and a worrying and problematic drought for the Mahorais.

Where do this lack of water and this drought come from? How to find a solution? We talk about it in this Franceinfo junior show with a specialist on the subject: Fahad Idaroussi Tsimanda, doctor of geography on natural risks and vulnerabilities. He is a researcher at the Montpellier Geography and Planning Laboratory (LAGAM) at Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 University.

To start the show, Céliane asks: “There is a water desalination plant on Petite Terre, why isn’t it enough for the island’s needs?”. Then Zayane wonders: “What is the impact of drought on animals?” Céliane, once again, would like to know: “Why did the other islands have water and not us?” The girl also asks: “The main source of water income in Mayotte is the hill reservoirs, wouldn’t it be time to think about using another means of water income?”. And finally Zayane asks: “What is the impact of global warming on the development of tourism in Mayotte?”

On this page, listen again to this Franceinfo junior program on the drought on the island of Mayotte.
