On Wednesday November 2, in the Cour Carrée du Louvre, in Paris, President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the great master of the Outrenoir, Pierre Soulages, who died last week at the age of 102.
A solemnity that goes down in history. The painter Pierre Soulages, who died on Wednesday October 26, is the fourth artist only, in 70 years, to receive an official tribute after Georges Braque, Le Corbusier and André Malraux, in the heart of the Louvre. “What other place than this square courtyard, surrounded by thousand-year-old masterpieces and eternal geniuses, and by his friends, by so many contemporary talents, to accompany him at the time of his departure”said President Emmanuel Macron during the ceremony, Wednesday, November 2.
The great French painter was one of the few, along with Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall, to have had a retrospective of his lifetime, within the walls of the Louvre, two years ago. He is one of the few to have seen his own museum in his hometown of Rodez (Aveyron). This artist is known worldwide for his endless shades of black. His audience wanted to be present on Wednesday, at the Louvre, to experience this historic moment. Friday, a mass will be celebrated in the abbey of Conques, in Aveyron, whose artist had made the stained glass windows. Pierre Soulages will be buried the same day in Paris.
