Running back and Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown has died at the age of 87.
One of the greatest players in football history, Brown was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 1965 and shattered the league record books during his brief career, which spanned from 1957 to 1965.
A spokesperson for the Brown family said the man passed away peacefully at his Los Angeles residence on Thursday evening. His wife, Monique, was by his side.
Brown led the Cleveland Browns to their last NFL title in 1964 and retired at the height of his glory after the 1965 season to pursue acting. His name appears in the credits of more than 30 films, including Any Given Sunday And The Dirty Dozen.
An unstoppable runner due to his power, speed and endurance, Brown was also one of the leaders of the black community in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. He dedicated much of his life to the social causes after retiring.
