Former Islanders defenseman Jean Potvin dies at 72

(Montreal) Jean Potvin, former New York Islanders defenseman and two-time Stanley Cup champion, died at the age of 72 on Tuesday.

Potvin spent most of his career with the Islanders, winning the prized trophy with him in the 1980-81 and 1981-82 seasons along with his brother, Denis.

Potvin totaled 613 games in the NHL, playing for the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, Cleveland Barons, Minnesota North Stars in addition to the Islanders.

In career, he scored 63 goals while collecting 224 assists for 287 points. His 1975-76 season was his most successful with a total of 72 points in 78 games.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Potvin family,” Islanders president and general manager Lou Lamoriello said in a statement.

“Jean was a leader on the ice, he helped the organization win two Stanley Cups. He established himself here in the community and has always been a player in the local scene. We send our deepest condolences to all those saddened by this loss.

After hanging up his skates, Potvin was on the Islanders’ game description team on radio during the ’80s.
