(Stockholm) Swedish tennis player Peter Lundgren, former coach of Roger Federer, has died at the age of 59, his son Lukas announced on social media on Friday.
“Unfortunately, one of the greatest has left us far too early. A coach, a player, a friend and a father,” his son wrote on Facebook, attaching a photo of Peter Lundgren flanked by the Swiss tennis star and Stan Wawrinka, another Swiss player he coached.
Lundgren won three ATP titles and reached No. 25e world ranking in 1985, a blessed era for Swedish tennis with stars like Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg succeeding the icon Bjorn Borg.
“Peter Lundgren was an extraordinary person with a huge heart and a great sense of humour,” Borg told the daily Aftonbladet.
“He was adored by all. He will be missed in world tennis.”
After his career, Lundgren coached Federer between 2000 and 2003, helping the Swiss win 10 ATP tournaments and his first Grand Slam title, at Wimbledon in 2003, with his Swedish coach.
