Formation of a committee on AI in higher education in Quebec

Over the next few months, a committee of experts will conduct reflection, consultation and analysis work on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in Quebec in higher education.

Concerns have recently been raised within higher education about advances in generative AIs like ChatGPT, which allow existing content to be used to generate new content. The absence of guidelines for the use of generative AIs was particularly deplored, particularly with regard to teaching content, teaching and evaluation, both in colleges and universities.

The joint expert committee of the Higher Council for Education (CSE) and the Commission for Ethics in Science and Technology (CEST) will therefore have the mandate to identify and analyze the educational and ethical issues and challenges . The benefits and risks associated with the current and future uses of generative AI for the training and evaluation of students will also be studied, as will the challenges for teacher training.

A targeted consultation with certain key players in the higher education network will also be organized to enable the committee of experts to paint a more complete picture of the situation and to take into account proposals and experiences from the field.

The committee of experts is notably made up of the presidents of the CSE and the CEST, as well as half a dozen professors and researchers in higher education.
