Fifa adapts its transfer rules for players affected by the war in Ukraine. The body announced on Monday March 7 that theForeign players and coaches employed in the Russian league and the Ukrainian league will see their contracts “suspended” until the end of the season and can freely sign up elsewhere in the spring.

In Russia, the stated objective is to “facilitate departure” of those who would not have reached an agreement with their club before March 10, 2022, explains FIFA. After this date, the players and coaches concerned will have the “right to unilaterally suspend their employment contract” until June 30. They will have until April 7 to commit to another championship, and will be “authorized to commit even if the registration period is closed with the club with which they conclude a new contract”.

In Ukraine, Fifa wants to allow foreign players and coaches to continue to “to work and receive a salary”all in “protecting Ukrainian clubs” almost all brought to a halt by the war. The world football body has therefore decided that“unless the parties to the relevant contract expressly agree otherwise, all employment contracts of foreign players and coaches with clubs affiliated to the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) shall be deemed to be suspended by operation of law until the end of the season in Ukraine (June 30, 2022), without the need for action by the parties to that effect.”

Fifa, which banned Russia from the 2022 World Cup, but risks facing an appeal to sports justice against this decision, has “reiterated its condemnation of the use of force by Russia in Ukraine” and called “to a rapid cessation of hostilities”.
