What place do the 120 hostages occupy in the minds of Israeli political and military power? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that there would be no negotiations with Hamas.

United in distress, hundreds of Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv (Israel), Friday October 13. They begged for the return of their loved ones, kidnapped by Hamas. “Our only hope is to see our child again. We can’t think of anything else,” says Katia Weiser, the mother of an abducted child. When it comes to hostages, the Israeli army traditionally has a doctrine: recover them at all costs. By hitting hard and fast, like in images shot on Saturday.

The situation has changed

We see an elite unit intervene, freeing hostages. Usually, Israel is also ready to negotiate. In 2011, Sergeant Gilad Shalit alone was exchanged for the release of more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. This time, the situation has changed, by the number of hostages on the one hand: 120 according to the Israeli army. According to Hamas, women and children are being held in different places in Gaza.

Israeli public opinion has also evolved. The only way out for binational or foreign hostage families is to turn to their government.
