Why is the National Rally (RN) showing itself, for the moment, lenient with Michel Barnier? Emmanuel Macron “took into account the RN’s criteria in choosing its Prime Minister”said Marine Le Pen in an interview with The Tribune Sunday, September 8th. “Michel Barnier seems to have the same view on immigration as we do”she noted, recalling what the current occupant of Matignon had defended during the Republican primary in 2021. “He is at least aware that immigration is a major problem”she added.
Marine Le Pen assured that her “wish not[était] not to cause a blockage”. “If we had wanted to, we would have done like the New Popular Front and threatened to censor everyone. That is not our state of mind.”she continued, warning that “this government will be[it] “obviously under surveillance”.
In her stronghold of Hénin-Beaumont (Pas-de-Calais), on Sunday morning, Marine Le Pen said she hoped that Michel Barnier would be “respectful of what the 11 million voters of the National Rally want”. “Mr Barnier must not forget the result of the European elections”she also stressed. The French, she said, are “extremely critical” vis-à-vis the current European construction and reject it. On June 9, the list led by Jordan Bardella came out on top by a wide margin, collecting nearly 31.37% of the votes.
Jordan Bardella, the president of the National Rally (RN), declared on Saturday that the RN had chosen to grant him the “benefit of the doubt”. The fact of not having chosen “a priori censorship” does not mean that there will be no “censorship in the coming months”he warned.
