The arrival of the sovereign pontiff in the Phocaean city comes a few days after the arrival on the Italian island of Lampedusa of nearly 8,500 migrants, which pushed the European Union to adopt an emergency plan to help Rome manage migratory flows. The Minister of the Interior declared Thursday on BFMTV that if the people who arrived in Lampedusa are eligible for refugee status, France “is willing to take (his) share of the burden”. “If France wants to continue to be able to welcome those who must be able to have access to asylum, then we must obviously be extremely firm on illegal immigration”engaged the Minister of Solidarity.
