Nearly two-thirds of the vegetables sold in our stores are imported, especially canned and frozen. In loss of yields, 7% of French vegetable producers are throwing in the towel.

A visit to the frozen and canned food section can take you very far: in the shelves, we find asparagus from China, beans fromEgyptbroccoli from Italy. Today, 40% of these products are grown and processed in France. But 63% of frozen vegetables come from Belgium, 19% from Spain, and 6% from Italy. A quarter of the preserves come from Spain, 24% from the Netherlands, and 9% from Kenya.

Discouraged French producers

Dependency will worsen with the lack of water due to climatic hazards. In 2022, 7% of vegetable producers have thrown in the towel. “We are missing 200,000 tonnes of frozen and industrial vegetables”believes Dominique Vaeskenpresident of the producers’ organization Oplinord. Producers denounce a lack of support. To reverse the trend, the government must announce a sovereignty plan. The goal: increase fruit and vegetable production by 2030.
