From June 2023, the country of origin of the cut flowers will have to be indicated, because more than 80% of the flowers sold in France come from abroad, and often from very far away, such as from Africa.
Where do the flowers that we buy and find in all seasons come from? “We have wallflower, it comes from Naples (…), it’s the same, we work a lot with Italy with carnations and on the other hand, we have everything that is hydrangeas, which comes from the Netherlands”explains Mary Paoliniflorist at Clamart (Hauts-de-Seine). Consumers often don’t know where they come from. But, from June 2023, the country of origin of the cut flowers will have to be indicated.
Nearly 90% of flowers bought don’t are not grown in France, like roses, which grow mainly in Kenya. This has a cost for the planet. “The French flower is not more expensive than the foreign flower”says Mary Paolini. Air transport weighs heavily on the carbon footprint of flowers. “Local flowers emit 30 times less carbon than imported flowers”says Hortense Harang, florist.
