Due to the high number of calls and claims insurers are receiving after the storm has passed Debbythe Financial Markets Authority (AMF) announced Thursday evening that it was allowing insurer employees who handle requests by telephone to manage claims of up to $30,000.
On Monday, the AMF raised the ceiling for claims to $7,500. Normally, the limit is $2,000.
The exemption period allowing the measure is retroactive to August 12 and will be in effect until November 11.
The AMF specifies that files opened during this period can be settled after the deadline if necessary.
This measure is in addition to other relaxations permitted by the AMF since Monday, in response to the damage caused by Debby.
Under these relaxations, insurance firms can use the services of additional workers, including those who do not hold a claims adjuster certificate.
“This is an exceptional measure that will help citizens struggling with the consequences of the recent floods,” Quebec Finance Minister Eric Girard said on the X platform.
Public Security Minister François Bonnardel congratulated his colleague on this announcement, stating on X that it was “for the benefit of many Quebecers.”
