Floods of the Seine: flooded in the middle of the night, the Normans fear the return of the water

The Seine is experiencing a record flood, which is submerging the small towns along the river. In Bardouville, in Seine-Maritime, residents were surprised by the water on the night of Monday April 8 to Tuesday April 9.

A race against time is launched in Bardouville (Seine-Maritime). We must seal and repair as quickly as possible the dike which, under the pressure of the water, broke over more than thirty meters, during the night of Monday April 8 to Tuesday April 9. All around, the gardens are already flooded, and the next flood forecast for Tuesday afternoon could make the situation worse. “If we don’t manage to put something back in place quickly to secure the hamlet, we will flood everything”deplores the mayor of the town, Dominique Rousseau. “About thirty houses” could be affected, he adds.

Nighttime floods

These towns, nestled in the meanders of the Seine, are approximately 50 kilometers from the sea. Since Monday April 8, they have lived to the rhythm of the tides. Because the river is so high that at each high tide, it can no longer flow, and overflows. At three o’clock in the morning on Monday night, a continuous flow infiltrated homes everywhere. Coming down as quickly as it arrived, the water leaves the residents distraught. Last night, the Seine rose to 9.55 meters in places, a record for more than twenty years.
