In Ukraine, the operation to evacuate civilians from Mariupol is due to resume on Monday 2 May. The day before, a hundred of them were able to leave the Azovstal factory. A first since the start of the war, hailed by the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky.

To evacuate, Sunday May 1, the undergrounds of the Azovstal factory of Mariupol (Ukraine) where they had been entrenched for weeks, civilians had to go up through the debris and the rubble. Around, the buildings are relentlessly pounded by the Russian army, and still mined. Ukrainian soldiers filmed the scene, and managed the exit from the rubble.

On the bus, women and children see the light of day for the first time in several weeks. “We were short of food, it was really hard for the children”, says a woman. At least a hundred civilians were evacuated on Sunday May 1. For the first time, humanitarian corridors were respected. The Ukrainians and the Russians collaborated under the aegis of the United Nations and the Red Cross.

Some of the evacuees have already been transferred to Zaporizhia (Ukraine). The evacuations would have resumed on the morning of Monday 2 according to the Ukrainian authorities, and should continue throughout the day.
