First courgettes that do not ripen and tomatoes with a lack of water: Jacky Mercier, his advice

Gardening is a school of humility, we do not master much, we must be constantly attentive and the years go by but are not alike. With this in mind, let’s listen to what Jacky Mercier, organic market gardener in Frontenay sur Dive (86), tells us.

1) But why do the very first zucchini often abort ?

The foot is not yet strong enough to bring the courgettes to maturity. A little patience and a lot of water!

2) We thought that it was especially not necessary to water the foliage of the tomatoes.

Yes, but in times of dry heat like we have been experiencing these days, spraying the foliage at the end of the day or at the very beginning of the day can help the plant to hydrate itself. But never in direct sunlight!!!

What about mildew then? Jacky replies that beyond 30° there is no more mildew.

3) Are there any happy vegetables in times of extreme dry heat?

Yes: eggplants and peppers.

4) Why are cabbage plants dying now?

Because of the flea beetle, a little black, jumping beast that makes holes in the leaves and quickly kills crucifers. I’m not sure we’ll find organic cabbage in the fall.

Must remember: NEVER WATER IN FULL SUN.

Listen again to hear the details of Jacky Mercier’s good advice.
