The price of a cubic meter of wood is rising and suppliers are wondering about their ability to meet demand in the coming weeks. Despite this, many French people are turning to the fireplace in the face of rising energy prices.

In a state-of-the-art wood stove, a few logs are already ready to burn for the winter. To heat his home, Eddy Verdru, a resident of Godewaersvelde (North), prefers to turn to the fireplace rather than turning on his electric heat pump. He has just spent 7,000 euros to install his stove. “It’s more of a pleasure choice than making a fireplace in the evening. Now, it’s true that with the crisis, I think it will turn a little more in the evening and longer to avoid electricity consumption”, he justifies.

According to the company that installed Eddy’s stove, requests for quotes are pouring in. Individuals are looking for a more economical mode of heating. “With the increases, in any case, it remains really profitable compared to all-electric heating or with a gas boiler”, explains Vincent Giot, Cheminées Poêles Création sales representative. In Béthune (Pas-de-Calais), the French market leader confirms this enthusiasm. In two months, the log has even dethroned pellets, the market leader before. At the national level, the demand for firewood has increased by 600,000 tons in less than two years.
