Finland | Several children injured in the collapse of a footbridge

(Helsinki) Twenty-seven young people, mainly children, were injured Thursday in Finland in the collapse of a temporary footbridge near Helsinki which caused them to fall several meters, announced the help.




“Some 27 young people, most of them minors, were injured to varying degrees” during the fall of this construction footbridge located in Espoo on the outskirts of the capital, the Finnish emergency services said in a press release.

The incident took place around 9:20 a.m. local time (2:20 a.m. EST).

According to images broadcast by the Finnish media, the wooden planks of the footbridge broke under the weight of the young people, causing them to fall about four to five meters below.

The injured were mostly part of a group from a school, said the services of the University Hospital of Helsinki.

According to the Finnish media, it is basically a class corresponding to pupils of about 14 years old, who went to a nearby museum.

Twenty-four of the injured were hospitalized, but their lives are not in danger, according to hospital services.

“Our support goes to those injured in the accident and their loved ones. You are in our thoughts,” Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin tweeted.
