Fifa (International Federation of Association Football) sent a letter to the CBF, the Brazilian football confederation, on December 24, threatening to suspend the country from its competitions. The legal imbroglios surrounding the dismissal of the president of the CBF and the organization of new elections displeased Fifa, which could take radical measures.
In Brazil, football is doing badly. There Seleção did not shine on the field in 2023 but it is behind the scenes that things get tough. To understand better, we have to go back to December 7. That day, a court impeached CBF President Ednaldo Rodriguez for irregularities during his 2022 election.
A delegation to Brazil on January 8
A political party tried to intervene on his behalf, but nothing worked. The decision is confirmed by the highest legal authorities in the country. New elections therefore had to be organized within 30 days. Until then, justice has entrusted the management of the CBF to a temporary worker, José Perdiz.
But all this is not at all to the taste of FIFA, which rejects any interference in the functioning of its member associations, including that of local justice, and calls for the reinstatement of Ednaldo Rodrigues at the head of the federation .
A delegation is due to go to Brazil on January 8, but if no agreement is reached, sanctions are expected. In the worst case scenario, Brazilian clubs and the national team could be banned from all international competitions.
