Montrealer Félix Auger-Aliassime delivered a hat trick courtesy of Tennis Canada, which on Wednesday voted him male player of the year, singles player of the year and most improved player.
These honors were awarded to her 24 hours after her compatriot Leylah Annie Fernandez received the same awards on the women’s side.
21-year-old Auger-Aliassime deserves Tennis Canada Player of the Year and Singles Player of the Year for the first time. This is the second time he has received the title of Most Improved Player. The Quebecer, who started the season at 21e world rank, finished the year at 11e echelon.
In addition to a run that took him to the semi-finals of the US Open, Auger-Aliassime also reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. He also qualified for the finals of two tournaments, those in Stuttgart and Melbourne.
Auger-Aliassime completed the season with a record of 38 wins and 24 losses and beat players from the top 10, including Alexander Zverev and Roger Federer, then ranked sixth and eighth, respectively
Tennis Canada’s other awards for excellence in the men’s categories went to Denis Shapovalov (doubles) and Quebecer Jaden Weekes (junior), who is originally from Ville Lasalle.
“Félix, Denis and Jaden have had excellent seasons and we are very happy to honor them today,” said Michael Downey, President and CEO of Tennis Canada, in a statement.
“In the difficult conditions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, they were able to stand out and offer exceptional performance. Felix, who became the first Canadian to reach the US Open semifinal, continued his meteoric rise and even reached the 10e ATP rankings, a personal high, ”recalled Downey.
Along with longtime partner Rohan Bopanna, Shapovalov reached the doubles quarterfinals of two Masters 1000 tournaments, Madrid and Indian Wells.
In singles, he finished the season in 14e place after occupying the 10e rank during the months of July and August.
