Last year, nearly 9 million counterfeit objects were seized in France. So how to fight against this scourge? An application is being tested in Yvelines. The objective is to supplement the targeted action of customs officers and save them time.

Clothing, sneakers and bags. That morning, the gendarmes check two brothers who are about to go on vacation, the trunk full of gifts for their family. The gendarmes have a doubt about certain products. Once identified, the suspicious object is photographed with the application and placed under sealed. At the gendarmerie, the agent is in contact with the brand. In a few minutes, he has confirmation whether the product is real or fake.

This application will not work or any form of investigation will not work if we know the data of the products and that we can identify products as best as possiblebelieves Isabelle Braun-Lemaire, Director General of French Customs. In 2021, more than 9 million fake products were seized. Counterfeiting even has its own museum in Paris. From the ballpoint pen to the food processor, all products can be imitated.
