Monday, May 9, a portrait of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol will be auctioned. This work is considered iconic, in the same way as the Venus emerging from the waters or the Mona Lisa. Andy Warhol made this portrait, two years after the death of the famous actress, from a photograph that he crops. “This is how he managed to capture, for the spectators and for each of us, everything that is most fascinating about Marilyn”explains Alex Rotter, president of the 20ᵉ century department of Christie’s.
This Marilyn on canvas has been declined on five paintings of different colors. He then turned to less laborious mass production, which made this portrait accessible to everyone. “The more the reproduction is there, the more the image asserts itself in our unconscious”says Bernard Bistene, honorary director of the National Museum of Modern Art at the Center Pompidou.
