Families of victims of Flight PS752 tragedy still seeking justice

The families of the victims of Flight PS752 will mark three years since the tragedy by participating in rallies to urge the federal government to take even tougher action against Iran.

In January 2020, the Iranian army shot down a Ukraine International Airlines plane at Tehran airport, killing 170 people, including 55 Canadian citizens.

Canada joined other countries last month in formally calling for binding arbitration in the case. This would start the process to bring a case against Iran in the International Court of Justice.

Various observers argue that this request should have been made earlier. They would have liked the RCMP to launch a criminal investigation while the federal government tried to negotiate with Iran.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with bereaved families on Friday. He told them that Canada will wage a relentless fight for truth, justice and accountability.

British media reported this week that the UK would add the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to its list of terrorist groups. Many hope that Canada will follow suit.

Canada has imposed sanctions on several Iranian figures and entities “in connection with gross and systematic violations of human rights, serious and continuing harm to international peace and security, and continuing disinformation activities sponsored by the state committed by Iran”.
