Residents, exasperated by speeding, install fake radars on their land to dissuade motorists from driving too fast.
In Burgundy, a radar has been installed to watch for motorists. With its black and yellow stripes, as well as its integrated camera, it is impossible to know that it is a fake. It’s a trompe-l’oeil, installed by Yann Rosniak, manager of the Bourgogne Solidaire recycling center, exasperated by speeding. According to him, vehicles that are too fast prevent his customers from entering and leaving his recycling center freely.
The fictional radar was made with salvaged parts. “Within minutes of installation it was slowing down“, assures Yann Rosniak, who fears a car accident. Some residents of the village are not convinced by this approach, but a cyclist welcomes the initiative. Examples of fake radars are thriving across France. In Dordogne, Gérard Moumon, retired, transformed his mailbox into a fictitious speed camera. It was quickly vandalized.
Fake radars are authorized on private land, but are prohibited on public roads.
