Exhibition “Women and Clemenceau” in Saint Vincent sur Jard

The Center des Monuments Nationaux is hosting the Clemenceau Museum’s focus exhibition Des Femmes et Clemenceau at the house and gardens of Georges Clemenceau, in Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard. La liberté pour horizon, from September 30, 2022 to April 30, 2023, focusing on Clemenceau’s positions on women’s rights through several portraits of women among his relations: Louise Michel, Marguerite Durand, Sévérine, Rose Caron, Blanche Hoschedé- Monet.

Renowned as a misogynist, Georges Clemenceau, from 1894, worked for the recognition of certain rights for women. Far from becoming a feminist, he vigorously protested against castrating and guilt-inducing Judeo-Christian morality. Rejecting puritanism and fighting against humiliation and injustice, he fights the bourgeois moral order and demands economic and social rights for women.

On the occasion of the exhibition, conferences will be offered, as well as a performance on January 21, 2023 of Octave Mirbeau’s Journal d’une femme de chambre. As part of International Women’s Rights Day, Wednesday March 8, 2023, entry to the exhibition will be free for women.
