Haiti is in the grip of chaos and plagued by gangs. Saturday March 30, evacuations continued. The French army was able to evacuate more than 200 people by air.

After three days at sea aboard a helicopter carrier, the 243 people evacuated from Haiti cry out their relief in Fort-de-France, Martinique. 163 of them are French. “You leave overnight. You get a call: ‘Evacuation tomorrow morning’. You leave part of the family behind, you leave everything you have, with two, three items of clothing in a suitcase”, testifies a woman. They are welcomed into a gymnasium. Some will return to Paris by plane, but many are thinking of their loved ones left behind.

Gangs have taken control of the capital

“We receive a lot of news, but when we receive the audio, we hear that there is shooting nearby”says a woman, who talks about her “feeling of having abandoned people”. In Haiti, gangs control 80% of the capital. The UN discusses a situation “cataclysmic”. The French army managed to evacuate more than 200 people by air. A helicopter was hit, without causing any injuries. 1,100 French nationals, mainly dual nationals, are still in Haiti.
