European Union (EU) diplomats in Bangladesh said on Tuesday, August 6, “very worried” following reports of attacks on minority groups, the day after the prime minister fled the country, which has been gripped by bloody riots.

EU mission heads “are deeply concerned by reports of multiple attacks on places of worship and members of religious, ethnic and other minorities in Bangladesh”said the EU ambassador to the country, Charles Whiteley, on the social network X.

Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved parliament on Tuesday, giving satisfaction to students whose protests ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The student protesters had called for the dissolution of parliament, as had the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which has demanded elections within three months. A transitional government is to be installed by the military.

Protests against a system of hiring quotas in the administration have left at least 413 dead across the country since the beginning of July.
