A European Union (EU) official, Enrique Mora, met Iranian officials in Tehran (Iran) on Sunday March 27 to try to settle the last points of disagreement with a view to a settlement of Iran’s nuclear program. .

The objective of the negotiations, launched several months ago, is to bring Washington back to the 2015 agreement governing Iran’s civilian nuclear program and to bring Tehran back to respecting its commitments. The visit of the EU coordinator responsible for overseeing the nuclear talks in Vienna, Austria, came a day after EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said reaching a deal was a “matter of days”.

Iran is negotiating in Vienna with China, Russia, France, the United Kingdom and Germany to revive the 2015 agreement supposed to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring the atomic bomb, an objective denied by Tehran, in exchange for the lifting of sanctions that are suffocating its economy. The United States, which has no diplomatic relations with Iran, participates indirectly in the discussions, via the EU.

The 2015 agreement fell apart after the unilateral American withdrawal in 2018 followed by the reinstatement of sanctions against Iran, which, in response, gradually freed itself from the limits imposed on its nuclear program.
