The lack of consensus among the population of administrative region 05, in the southeast of the province, led Quebec to advocate keeping the name Estrie.

“In light of the various comments received and considering the lack of a broad consensus within the population regarding the proposed name change, the government recommends the status quo and the maintenance of the current toponym for the administrative region of Estrie. “, said the minister responsible for the region, François Bonnardel, in a press release on Tuesday.

Recall that it was the Table of Regional County Municipalities of Estrie that had requested a revision of the name of the region, also called Cantons-de-l’Est (especially in terms of tourism). La Table wanted to standardize the name by keeping only the Eastern Townships toponymy.

On the ground, the Estriens were however divided on the question, had observed The Press.

In March, the Commission municipale du Québec conducted a public consultation in which more than 500 people and organizations participated. The Quebec government relied on the report released Tuesday to make its decision.

“I would like to thank the CMQ, which used its expertise to organize and hold this consultation,” said Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Andrée Laforest. The work she carried out made it possible to hear all of the stakeholders who wished to share their point of view and their concerns. »
