Erramun Martikorena – Zuti Neska ta Mutila

Erramun Martikorena is certainly the most famous shepherd in the Basque Country!
In addition to his profession, his other great passion is singing, which he has practiced since a young age.
A native of Baigorry (1943), Erramun first sang in the village choir before performing alone, or accompanied by musicians, on stage.
His name was quickly known, because his voice left everyone speechless: what power, what timbre, what purity! And at the same time, what simplicity in the character…

Erramun Martikorena, shepherd, poet and activist

For Erramun, nature is nothing but poetry: he is attached to his birthplace, Otsobi, to his mountains and to his sheep, which he leads, even today, on the grassiest slopes.
He is also a great defender of the Basque language, which makes the identity of the people of this country. He does not hesitate either to denounce the repression suffered by the Basque Country and by the inhabitants, in particular the young people: he points the finger at the injustices but he only aspires to peace in this country.

“Zuti neska ta mutila”

This track opens Erramun Martikorena’s brand new album.
It is a text by an unknown author, which invites young people, girls and boys, to rise up against the oppressor, to defend their homeland and continue to speak in their language, Basque.
The melody is beautiful, and sublimated by the crystalline voice of Erramun Martikorena, who, at almost 80 years old, continues to enchant us.
