The candidacy of Mr. Trottier, who will succeed Gilles Carignan, was unanimously endorsed by the board of directors of the information cooperative. In an interview with Sun, the former reporter explains that he is particularly “excited” by the cooperative model.

“The idea of being able to be in a news company where the profits are not paid to the shareholders, but rather are reinvested in the product by the development or the hiring of journalists, is something extraordinary. ”

The future director, one of the main architects of The Press +, says he is also motivated by the digital challenges of Sun, which this year celebrates its 125e birthday.

The newspaper became a cooperative in December 2019 following the financial difficulties of Groupe Capitales Médias. ” Two years ago, The sun was in dire straits, the new boss explained on a daily basis. The current team pulled the journal out of the doldrums and put it back on track. Today, the position of Sun looks solid to me, but the job is not done. ”

Éric Trottier, after spending three decades at Press, had announced his departure in November 2020 to think about “a new career”. Formalized on 1er January 2021, his sabbatical, during which he notably traveled to Africa, will therefore have lasted almost a year to the day.
