The Minister of Justice assures that he did not know that the detainees of the prison of Fresnes (Val-de-Marne) had to go karting. He again mentioned the controversy on Tuesday August 23, during a trip to Fleury-Mérogis (Essone).
Eric Dupont-Moretti persists and signs: neither he nor his cabinet were aware of the organization of a karting activity during the “Kohlanness” event at Fresnes prison (Val de Marne). “If I had known that a karting competition was organized, I would have put a very clear veto. It is an initiative of the director of the prison of Fresnes, and what the ministry knew, it is that there was a sporting competition, in which it had never been question of karting“, he pleads.
According to our information, two of the detainees who took part in the activities of the program are respectively convicted of murder and rape. The latter, aged 31, is serving a 10-year prison sentence which should see him released in 2031. They did not take part in the go-kart race, but rather in activities like tug of war. The criteria that guided the choice of participating inmates would include their good behavior and their motivation to reintegrate.
