A criticized tribute. Like many French political figures, the president of the National Rally (RN) reacted, Friday February 16, to the death of Russian opponent Alexeï Navalny. “This is tragic news for all defenders of human rights and fundamental freedoms,” wrote on X Jordan Bardella. “Save your crocodile tears”replied the Minister of Justice, a few hours later on the social network. “Navalny died for opposing your friend Putin, tackle Eric Dupond-Moretti. You were born before shame.”

The leader of the RN deputies, Marine Le Pen, for her part soberly presented her condolences to the family of this “political activist committed to defending democracy”. In 2022, on the eve of the second round of the French presidential election, Alexeï Navalny called for a vote for Emmanuel Macron against Marine Le Pen, accusing the RN of compromising with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In January, the party was questioned by an investigation of Washington Post pointing to persistent ties with the Kremlin with a view to weakening France’s support for Ukraine. “It’s all a cabal”then reacted the spokesperson for the RN, Laurent Jacobelli, affirming that there was no “no link” between Russia and his party.
