The unanimous adoption by the National Assembly of Quebec of a motion of support for the capital’s tramway project proves that there is a democratic distortion in Quebec, argues the leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ), Éric Duhaime .
“100% of the CAQ-liberals-solidarity-PQists agree, while more than 60% of people in the region are opposed to it,” denounced Mr. Duhaime in a press release on Thursday. “These four parties together represent only 30% of the people of Quebec on the most expensive project in the history of the region. […] The democratic distortion has gone on long enough. »
Recent surveys on the issue, notably that carried out by the Léger firm in October 2022 on behalf of the City of Quebec, estimate that opposition to the project is around 50%.
The motion in question was presented by solidarity MP Étienne Grandmont. It stipulates in particular that the National Assembly “reiterates its support for the current tramway and structuring network project of the City of Quebec”.
A first version asked the government to “commit to supporting without interference” the project and to “continue to invest the sums necessary for its realization”, but the Minister of Transport, Geneviève Guilbault, amended it to mitigate the impact. scope.
Thus, in the version on which the deputies voted, the motion only asks the government “to continue its collaboration with the City in carrying out this project”. The 99 deputies present during the vote all voted in favor.
Remember that the day after the October 2022 election, Conservative leader Éric Duhaime said he was the victim of a democratic distortion since he had not elected any MP with 13% of the votes, while the Liberal Party had elected 21 with barely a percentage point more.
