Éric Coquerel, deputy La France insoumise, was elected, Thursday June 30, Chairman of the very strategic Finance Committee. It controls the state budget and has access to very sensitive information.

This is one of the most coveted positions in the National Assembly. On the morning of Thursday, June 30, Éric Coquerel, deputy La France insoumise, became chairman of the Finance Committee. A first in the history of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s party. “I quickly count that we see a little the difference with the past five years, or roughly speaking, it was often presidents who were somewhat compatible with the visions of the majority”did he declare.

Beyond the symbol, the position, traditionally reserved for the opposition, is one of the most powerful in Parliament. The Finance Committee controls the State budget and its application. It can also open commissions of inquiry. As such, its president can ask the Ministry of the Economy for the tax declarations of any individual or company. With a debt of the state record and a public deficit at the highest, the position will be strategic during the five-year term, while the proposals of La France insoumise are at the antipodes of the policy of Emmanuel Macron.
