From Brittany to the Alps, environmental defenders are beaten and intimidated. The France Nature Environnement association has counted 52 threats and acts of violence in seven years.

A car targeted, stoned by hunters in Villers-Cotterêts (Aisne). Slurry deposited in front of environmental associations in Toulouse or Haute-Savoie. Patrick Picaud, vice-president of the Nature Environnement 17 association, himself paid the price: after farmers demonstrated peacefully, part of the procession headed towards his property. Its facade is cougreen with tags, tires and pebbles are thrown at his house. “They attacked my wife”he complains.

More than fifty threats in seven years

According to France Nature Environnement, between 2015 and 2022, at least 52 threats and attacks against environmental activists took place. Lamya Essemlali, president of Sea Shepherd France, was attacked outside her home by Breton fishermen. Have associations for the defense of agriculture helped to increase the pressure? For Sylvie Ollitrault, research director at the CNRS, “public opinion is more sensitive to ecological issues, the agricultural world and certain communities will feel isolated, so anger is stronger”.
