The march organized by activists from several university and CEGEP associations was planned as a one-way trip between Place Émilie-Gamelin, next to the Berri-UQAM metro station, and Place du Canada, downtown, but instead it looped.
The participants left Place Émilie-Gamelin a little after 1:30 p.m. and walked briskly towards downtown, under gray skies and a few drops of rain. In less than an hour, they had reached Place du Canada, where they made only a brief stop. After a detour via Sainte-Catherine Street, the time to chant “Capital destroys the Earth” between a bank facade and the windows of clothing and shoe stores, they went back down to René-Lévesque Boulevard, without however stop at Place du Canada.
“The leading procession did what it wanted, in fact. People were keen to keep marching, so from there, we improvised, ”summarized Quentin Baudens, of the Student Faculty Association of Political Science and Law at UQAM (AFESPED), on the phone after the march.
The demonstrators left in the direction of Place Émilie-Gamelin, where they dispersed around 3:30 p.m. “It bodes well for the next actions,” rejoiced Mr. Baudens.
