“The world has had enough” of this “endless nightmare”. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres was in Egypt, at the gates of the Gaza Strip, to demand “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in the fighting between Israel and Hamas, Saturday March 23.
“I echo the vast majority of the world who have seen enough. Who has had enough”Antonio Guterres told the press from the Egyptian side of the Rafah border post. “In Gaza, the Palestinians are stuck in an endless nightmare”added the official, deploring the “houses destroyed, families and entire generations gone, and hunger and starvation hanging over the population”.
“It is time for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire”
“Nothing justifies the horrific attacks by Hamas on October 7. And nothing justifies the collective punishment suffered by the Palestinian people. Now more than ever, it is time for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire”, launched Antonio Guterres, as the Israeli offensive plunged the Gaza Strip to the brink of famine. Some 32,142 people were killed by the Israeli response in the Gaza Strip, according to a report from the Hamas Ministry of Health on Saturday (a toll impossible to confirm independently).
The UN chief called on Israel to take “solid commitment” to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. “In the spirit of compassion of Ramadan, it is time to immediately release all hostages” in Gaza, he also declared to the attention of Palestinian Hamas. Some 130 people are still held hostage in Gaza, 33 of whom are believed to have died, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli sources.
