Launched and Thriving: Les Cheffes de file Initiative
Since its inception in 2018 by CDPQ, the initiative known as Les Cheffes de file has been on a remarkable trajectory of growth. Currently, it unites over 120 dynamic entrepreneurs who benefit from a robust community, significantly enhancing the local economy.
Five years post-launch, the significance of Cheffes de file within the business landscape is more evident than ever. Catherine Samson, Senior Director of Business Relations in Quebec at CDPQ and the driving force behind this initiative from the start, expresses her enthusiasm: “We have created platforms for entrepreneurs to exchange ideas, fostering growth strategies that expedite their action plans.”
A Unique Community for Entrepreneurs
Les Cheffes de file stands out as a pioneering initiative designed to connect shareholder entrepreneurs who hold decision-making roles in Quebec-based companies. To qualify, organizations must generate annual revenues between $5 million and $50 million and exhibit substantial growth potential.
The community is diverse, encompassing businesses from various regions across Quebec. Impressively, six out of ten participating companies employ over fifty individuals, representing a wide spectrum of industries. A shared ambition among these enterprising leaders is evident: a collective drive to elevate their businesses to new heights.
To facilitate this growth, the initiative provides invaluable resources. “Our flexible, personalized, and complimentary approach includes meetings, workshops, training sessions, and collaborative development activities that help entrepreneurs sharpen their strategic and operational skills,” Catherine Samson explains. Additionally, participants gain access to a rich network of experts and partners through CDPQ, which is highly valued among members.
To tailor its offerings, CDPQ conducted a participant survey last year. “This feedback enabled us to refine our tools and training. We now present an exclusive format featuring selective cohorts focused on specific themes, such as financial strategies, strategic planning, or market expansion. Each cohort member transitions swiftly from training to actionable steps and collaborates on solution development,” adds Catherine Samson.
Beyond local initiatives, Cheffes de file has set its sights on international growth, leveraging CDPQ’s global offices. “In March 2023, we organized a commercial mission to New York, bringing together five retail companies. They engaged with buyers and marketing experts, and thanks to CDPQ’s connections, they also accessed commercial real estate specialists,” Catherine Samson elaborates.
The results were promising, allowing entrepreneurs to validate or pivot certain projects. For instance, Luminaire Authentik launched a pop-up store in New York in partnership with Cozey, another company within CDPQ’s portfolio. More exciting news could be on the horizon!
