The South Korean series, dark and violent denunciation of the excesses of capitalism which has seduced the whole planet, should face Succession of the HBO platform and other American heavyweights as Hollywood productions returned to film sets en masse after the health restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The list of candidates will be announced at a ceremony via the internet, which will begin at 11.30 a.m.

The Emmy Awards of this 74e edition will be awarded on September 12.

Here are five things to watch when the nominations are announced on Tuesday:

The “subtitle barrier”

Three years ago, the South Korean film Parasite had won the Oscar for best feature film, shattering for the first time in this flagship category what its director Bong Joon-ho had called “the barrier of subtitles”.

Squid Game will he repeat the feat this year?

The satirical series features hundreds of characters from the most marginalized fringes of South Korea, participating in children’s games like “one, two, three, sun” to win a huge sum of money, at the risk of be killed.

It is currently the most watched Netflix series in the world, ahead of Stranger Things.

“It’s impressive,” says Pete Hammond, the magazine’s TV and film awards specialist. Deadline. “I would be surprised if she is not in the top 2 or the top 3 of the total number of nominations,” he adds.

She also shot mainly in Korean, the Apple TV + series Pachinko was also very popular and could be selected.

No work shot in a language other than English has so far managed to win in the drama series category at the Emmy Awards.

fierce competition

While the pandemic had forced many series to postpone their production last year, the list of potential candidates is bloated this year, both for drama series and for comedies.

Winner in 2020, Successionwhich follows the horrors of a powerful family whose members plot and tear each other apart, is making a comeback along withozark (Netflix) and Better Call Saul (AMC).

Comedy side, The Fabulous Mme Maisel (Amazon Prime) and barry (HBO) could both win new trophies.

They will find on their way the great winner of the previous edition, Ted Lassoand the series hackswhose second season has won over critics.

Finally, recognition for Yellowstone ?

With Kevin Costner as headliner and eleven million viewers for the launch of its fourth season, Yellowstone seems cut out to win at the Emmy Awards.

But this modern western with a touch of soap-opera has so far only received one nomination, in a minor technical category.

Voters may have been put off by the show’s overtly conservative overtones or its airing on the relatively modest Paramount Network, but its popularity has steadily grown, especially among progressive-leaning elites.

“We’ll see if popularity alone plays into the competition this year. If that is the case, Yellowstone will have its moment of glory. It’s watched everywhere, we’ll see if it’s also watched by the Academy Emmy Awards, ”says Pete Hammond.

A breakthrough for Hulu?

Platforms HBO and Netflix tend to dominate in Emmy nominations, but this year, the small Hulu, owned by the giant Disney, could shine.

Hulu, which only broadcasts in the United States, is behind original creations like The Scarlet Maidwinner in 2017, and continues to expand its production.

She aligns this year dopesicka favorite in the miniseries category, in which Michael Keaton plays a doctor involved in the opiate crisis that is ravaging the United States.

In the same category, Hulu also produces The Dropoutfeaturing Amanda Seyfried in the role of a fallen star of biotechnology, or even Pam and Tommywhich traces the theft of the sex tape by Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee in the 1990s.

Cramped miniseries

For a long time considered the poor relation of competition, miniseries are on the rise with productions whose number and quality are improving from year to year.

In addition to Hulu series, The White Lotus (HBO) is extremely popular, as is maid (Netflix), with Andie MacDowell and her daughter Margaret Qualley, which humorously and delicately explores the trauma of domestic violence.

But while drama series and comedies each field eight contestants, miniseries are limited to five.

“They have to change the rules,” said Pete Hammond.

“It’s the Emmys’ forte, and this year is no exception.”
