Visiting Le Havre (Seine-Maritime), Emmanuel Macron spoke on Thursday evening, September 12, about a “new era” with a fragmented parliament, while the new Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, continues to consider the composition of his government.
This new political configuration “with a Parliament that represents France in its diversity will require compromises. It is up to the government to carry out projects, to pass laws, but also to administer. The president has his own skills”, explained the President of the Republic, during a commemorative visit to Le Havre for commemorate the city’s liberation from Nazi rule.
Asked about his role in this unprecedented period, particularly with regard to Prime Minister Michel Barnier, the Head of State said: “I am playing the role that I have always played, by being in contact with our compatriots.” “Afterwards, it is in the long term, in practice, that things will happen naturally. But I also hope that compromises will be made for the country because that is what we need.”he added.
While he was in Le Havre with Edouard Philippe, former Prime Minister and Mayor of the city, the Head of State refused to comment on his relationship with Michel Barnier, from the Republicans. He said he held the same “line” for seven years with regard to the head of government. “This is how the institutions function properly and how France can be well presided over and well governed,” he justified himself.
“We work in privacy and trust, but we don’t reveal things to everyone outside,” he continued. “He works, he listens, he consults and he will build”he said about Mr Barnier, who has begun a series of consultations with the various political parties represented in Parliament, including going to the parliamentary days of the Republicans in Haute-Savoie on Thursday.
