France is on their side. Emmanuel Macron affirmed, on Saturday February 26, his “determination to support our partners in the Eastern Neighbourhood” of the European Union “against any attempt at tension and destabilization”. “We stand with Moldova and Georgia to defend their sovereignty and security,” declared the President of the Republic who spoke with the Moldovan President, Maïa Sandu, and the Georgian President, Salomé Zurabishvili, about the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Elysée also specifies that the latter is invited to Paris “At the beginning of next week”.

The head of French diplomacy, Jean-Yves Le Drian, considers it possible that the Russian offensive underway in Ukraine will extend to Moldova and Georgia. These two former Soviet republics both have separatist territories totally turned towards Moscow. That of Transnistria, in Moldova, has a military base near the Ukrainian city of Odessa.

The Russian invasion launched Thursday at dawn also threw tens of thousands of Ukrainians on the roads, arriving at the EU borders, in Moldova, Poland but also in Hungary and Romania.
