Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix | Sainz accident: qualifying interrupted

(Imola) The second part of qualifying (Q2) for the Formula 1 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix was temporarily interrupted on Friday after an accident for Carlos Sainz Jr (Ferrari).

The Spaniard lost control of his single-seater to hit a wall, damaging the front left of his car. He came out unscathed, but it was a blow for the Scuderia driver who had set the second best provisional time of the session behind Max Verstappen (Red Bull).

It was the second red flag of the qualifying session: during the first part (Q1), the right rear brake of Alexander Albon’s (Williams) single-seater caught fire, causing the explosion of his tire which thrown a lot of debris onto the runway. The session resumed about ten minutes later, the time to clean the track.

This weekend, the Italian round marks the return on Saturday of a sprint race, a format inaugurated last season.

With the sprint races, the classic qualifications (time trials) are brought forward from Saturday to Friday. Their result defines the starting order of a race of 100 km and 30 minutes approximately on Saturday, which itself defines the starting grid of the GP on Sunday.
