Selena Gomez in "Emilia Perez" by Jacques Audiard. (WHY NOT PRODUCTIONS / PATHÉ FILMS)

During the Cannes Film Festival, film buffs, journalists and the world of cinema discover dozens of films. But the general public often impatiently awaits the various feature films in theaters to enjoy them in the same way. What are the release dates? We answer your questions for a selection of them (the list is obviously not exhaustive).

“Kinds of Kindness”

Yorgos Lanthimos was back in Cannes with a rather unique film, Kinds of Kindness. A triptych around questions of power, money and free will. These are three intertwining stories in which the director distills his acid vision of a humanity in search of meaning. With a high-class cast including Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley. In this new feature film, the filmmaker plays with narrative subtleties that have enchanted many festival-goers. The film is expected on screens on June 26, 2024.

“Emilia Perez”

Jacques Audiard’s new film has excited the Croisette. It’s the one that almost everyone seems to agree on. Far from the universe ofA prophet, Grand Jury Prize in 2009, since the director signed with Emilia Perez, a Mexican musical comedy with actresses Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez. And if the excitement is at its height, it is undoubtedly for the genre and register of the film which are the most improbable of this fortnight. A thriller set against a musical comedy backdrop which tells the story of a Mexican drug lord who kidnaps a lawyer so that she can help him realize his wildest dream, to become the woman he always wanted to be. Engaging, this feature film raises the issue of violence against women, but also the issue of gender since the big revelation of the film is Karla Sofia Gascon, a transgender Spanish actress. Theatrical release is planned on August 28, 2024. But the most impatient will be able to discover it in five Pathé de France, Sunday May 26 at 4:30 p.m.

“The Shrouds”

Devastated by the death of his wife in 2017, David Cronenberg began writing the screenplay and then directing the Shrouds, screened Monday May 20 in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. At the age of fifty, Karsh, a famous businessman, is unable to mourn the loss of his wife. To make up for this loss, he invented GraveTech, an audiovisual computer system connected to the shrouds that allows visitors to see their loved one in the grave. When he notices that nine graves, including that of his wife, have been desecrated, he investigates to find those responsible. It will be released in theaters on September 25, 2024, but for those who would like to see it in preview, Pathé is screening it in five of its cinemas on Saturday May 25 at 9 p.m.

“Marcello Mio”

With Marcello Mio, presented this year in the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival, Christophe Honoré once again probes the subject of filiation and mourning. But this time, he takes on a cinema monster: Marcello Mastroianni. To play the actor who died in 1996, he naturally asked his daughter, Chiara Mastroianni, his favorite actress, to play her own role. And the question will arise again with a cinematic dimension. How can we bring back the memory of a being who haunts our lives as much as the film? To support him in this quest for identity, the director surrounds him with an intimate and family cast. Catherine Deneuve, Benjamin Biolay, Melvil Poupaud, Fabrice Luchini, Nicole Garcia, all in their own roles, enter this dreamlike farce. In cinemas since on May 21.

“The Second Act”

Léa Seydoux, Louis Garrel, Vincent Lindon and Raphaël Quenard form the leading quartet of this Second Act by Quentin Dupieux, which was the opening film of the festival, presented out of competition. Florence (Léa Seydoux) goes with her father Guillaume (Vincent Lindon) to a restaurant where she will introduce him to David (Louis Garrel), the man of her life. But the latter does not like Florence and he is accompanied by his friend Willy (Raphaël Quenard) whom he introduces to her. The exchanges turn sour, until an event shakes things up… Currently in theaters.

“Furiosa”

Director George Miller returns to service for the fifth time at the head of the saga Mad Max, which he inaugurated in 1979. In FuriosaAnya Taylor-Joy (Dune 2, Last Night in Soho, The Lady’s Game…) replaces Charlize Theron at the head of a more feminine film. By escaping her predators, Furiosa will exercise her right of revenge. In theaters since on May 22.

“Horizon: an American Saga”

Kevin Costner’s latest feature film, Horizon: an American Saga, presented out of competition at Cannes, is a western filmed in Utah, which tells the history of America, through the saga of the colonists, who set out to conquer the West. For the American director, “it’s more the promise of what America could be for those who emigrated from Europe“. According to him, “they were promised that there was more land in the United States than anyone could imagine. They were promised that if you were tenacious enough, strong enough, you could become its master.Horizon: an American Saga is the first part of a series of qube films which will be ten hours in total. On screens, July 3, 2024.

“The count of Monte Cristo”

On the shores of the Mediterranean, the fame of Edmond Dantès generally attracts tourists to his castle, but today, the enigmatic character appeared on the Croisette. Here, Alexandre Dumas’ hero has the features of Pierre Niney. “It’s a bit like our own Hamlet, there are so many characters in one, a very strong story of revenge and both adventure and psychology, almost tragedy at times, that I liked it a lot”, explains Pierre Niney to France Télévisions. That of this young sailor unjustly imprisoned, rich and thirsty for revenge, is a story that inspires cinema. the count of Monte Cristo of 2024 has taken on a new lease of life. It continues to keep readers and spectators in suspense. A film returned to theaters the 28th June 2024.
