If it were up to the Commission on Electoral Representation, Montreal and Gaspésie could soon lose their democratic weight.
The independent organization tabled a preliminary report in the National Assembly on Tuesday containing its most recent proposals for electoral boundaries. This recommends the maintenance of a total of 125 constituencies, but suggests the withdrawal of one constituency in Montreal and another in Gaspésie, for the benefit of the Laurentians and Centre-du-Québec.
According to the scenario of the Director General of Elections of Quebec (DGEQ), the Gaspé ridings of Gaspé and Bonaventure would merge to simply become Gaspé-Bonaventure. A portion of the current constituency of Gaspé would also pass into Matane-Matapédia.
In Montreal, a profound reorganization of the electoral map would see the riding of Anjou—Louis-Riel disappear. The constituencies of Camille-Laurin and Rosemont would share the territory left behind.
And that’s not all for Montreal. The DGEQ scenario actually modifies seven constituencies on the island, including five which currently belong to Québec solidaire.
Élections Québec proposes to compensate for the withdrawal of two constituencies by the addition of two others, in the Laurentians and in Centre-du-Québec. The constituencies of Bellefeuille, to the west and north of Saint-Jérôme, and of Marie-Lacoste-Gérin-Lajoie, which would sit partly on the territory of Drummondville, would therefore be created.
