At least 25 people were killed and 35 injured when their bus crashed into a truck parked on the side of the road in central Egypt on Thursday, the state daily Akhbar Elyom reports.
“The driver of the truck had stopped on the side of the road to change a tire when he was hit from behind by the bus” with around fifty passengers on board, explained the governorate of Minya, where the incident took place. the accident, 300 kilometers south of Cairo. A previous report, given by the governorate earlier on Tuesday, reported 22 dead and 33 injured.
The Ministry of Solidarity announced that it would pay compensation of around 500 euros to the relatives of each victim.
Traffic accidents are frequent in Egypt where the roads are often poorly maintained and the rules of the road not respected.
Officially, 7,000 people were killed in traffic accidents in 2020 in the Arab world’s most populous country of 103 million.
